There are not enough protections for community members who live near facilities that use and store harmful chemicals and for workers who often deal with hazardous working conditions. This needs to change.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting comments as part of its review of its Risk Management Program (Chemical Disaster Rule) until this Thursday, June 15th.
The 2017 Risk Management Program rules were a step in the right direction, but the Trump administration rolled back most of these protections at the behest of the chemical industry. Fortunately, the EPA under the Biden Administration wants to reexamine these protections, especially given the unique threat the climate crisis poses to chemical plants, refineries, and other facilities that use and store harmful chemicals.
