An accurate census is essential in determining how seats are divvied up in Congress as well as in state and local governments. But the Supreme Court just ruled that the Trump administration can end the 2020 census prematurely, even though the coronavirus has made it more difficult than usual to complete the process.
Ending the census early means that people the Census Bureau needs more time to count — people of color, immigrants, poor people, younger Americans, and residents of big cities — will be undercounted. And it just so happens that those groups tend to vote Democrat more than they vote Republican.
The 2020 census should be carried out completely and accurately, NOT ended prematurely to achieve an unfair partisan advantage for the next 10 years.
