Message:

I strongly oppose President Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler’s attack on the EPA’s New Source Performance Standards, which protect Americans by providing critical reductions of methane and toxic air pollution. Weakening these commonsense, cost-effective methane standards will hurt vulnerable communities living near these oil and gas operations and hurt all American families by exacerbating the climate crisis. Voluntary programs are no replacement for clear rules that apply fairly to all companies. Just a small fraction of oil and gas producers participate in the industry’s voluntary pollution reduction programs, and those programs are not enough to reduce methane leaks and pollution. We need to significantly cut methane from the oil and gas industry to protect the health of our communities and preserve a livable climate. Methane is one of the leading sources of climate pollution. Strong federal standards are necessary. This proposed rollback is bad for Americans, and especially vulnerable and frontline communities that bear the devastating impacts of climate change. The EPA should listen to the diverse voices demanding that methane rules remain strong and intact. Weakening or eliminating these rules would be a giveaway to the oil and gas industry’s worst actors.
