"Hello! I encourage you to regulate the use of AI in campaign ads.
I'm worried about campaigns using AI to create ads with the intention of misleading voters. Not everybody cares deeply about politics, and average Americans shouldn't have to dig into research to know whether or not ads from campaigns are depicting real events or if they were generated by AI.
I understand that there is a law that prohibits “fraudulent misrepresentation” — candidates putting words in the mouths of their opponents that they never said or implied. The FEC should make clear that deliberately deceptive AI content depicting a candidate saying or doing something that they never did is covered under this law.
It's important to get out ahead of this issue with regulations to rein in deceptive AI-content in campaign ads now — before an election swings on the release of a damaging, AI-generated campaign ad and breaks the remaining trust people have in our elections and democracy.
Thank you for your time."
