Dear Representative: This week, two House committees – Education and Labor, and Ways and Means – will mark up bills to address the abusive practice of surprise balance billing. It’s an outrage that every day, 10,000 patients receive surprise medical bills, even if they received needed care at a hospital that is covered by their insurance. This is endemic in our fragmented, broken health care system, which prioritizes profits over patients. As your constituent, I urge you to swiftly advance legislation that stops the heinous practice of surprise billing, protects consumers across all health plans and provider settings, and holds down health care costs. Please support legislation that includes a fair, market-based benchmark payment rate as the most efficient way to settle payment disputes to hold health care costs down for America’s families. Also, please ensure that such legislations bans air ambulance providers from surprise billing their patients. This is the very least that Congress can do right now to protect consumers on the road to implementing a Medicare for All system to transform our broken, for-profit health care system so that everyone can get the care they need without worry of financial ruin.
