Another CPS Energy Rate Increase Is Coming. San Antonio Needs a Residential Consumer Advocate

CPS Energy is preparing another rate increase proposal that the utility will present to the San Antonio City Council in the fall. The mayor and council members are responsible for reviewing and voting on any increase.

Rates must be fair and equitable and should encourage energy conservation, and large industrial and commercial customers need to pay their fair share.

A professional consumer advocate with experience analyzing rates can help ensure that CPS Energy treats residential customers fairly and that rates are aligned with city and community priorities.

The Council must hire a residential consumer advocate to do the job properly!

Subject: Hire a consumer advocate for CPS Energy rate increase

Message:

CPS Energy is preparing to propose another rate increase and I’m writing to ask the City Council to hire a residential consumer advocate. The expected rate increase proposal is the second increase in two years and many in our community are struggling to pay their bills. Residential customers are at a disadvantage when a utility proposes rate changes because of the incredible amount of data and complexity that goes into setting rates. We need an experienced and committed professional rate expert to represent residential customers and advise the Council as you consider CPS Energy’s proposal. This due diligence will benefit the community and is healthy for the utility. Residential customers of utilities subject to Public Utility Commission of Texas oversight are represented in rate increase cases by the Office of Public Utility Counsel. The customers of CPS Energy – overseen by the City Council -- deserve similar representation. The rate increase proposal will come from CPS Energy soon. There’s no time to waste hiring a consumer advocate.
