We need a rapid transition to electric vehicles (EVs) — and a revamp of our transportation systems — to end our reliance on fossil fuels. As the largest global auto manufacturer, Toyota can help shift the global market on EVs.
But so far, Toyota has lobbied against tax breaks for EVs and opposed requirements to sell them!
Tell Toyota to put its anti-climate action in reverse and commit to producing only zero-emission vehicles by 2030 in the U.S.
Petition to Incoming Toyota CEO Koji Sato
While Toyota continues to market itself as a sustainable company, its refusal to prioritize EVs and ongoing opposition to strong climate policies tell a different story.
Toyota must bring clean, electric vehicles to market and phase out polluting models starting now. That means producing new electric vehicles of all types, advertising to support selling them, and investing in charging infrastructure.
As Toyota’s new CEO, you can change course. Commit to a zero-emissions future today.
Dear Incoming Toyota CEO Koji Sato,
Gas-powered vehicles, including hybrids, drive climate change and have devastating impacts on public health. We must move away from gasoline and diesel engines in the next decade to solve the climate crisis. In the U.S., the transportation sector is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
As the world’s largest automaker, Toyota must shift the industry toward a fossil-fuel free future or risk falling behind its competitors. Toyota must bring clean, electric vehicles to market and phase out polluting models starting now. That means producing new electric vehicles of all types, advertising to support their sales, and investing in charging infrastructure.
We are calling on you to:
phase out internal combustion engine vehicles (including hybrids and plug-in hybrids) in the U.S. and Europe by 2030 and globally by 2035;
align your advocacy and lobbying with the goal of phasing out internal combustion engines, and be a voice for 100% renewable energy economy-wide;
require 100% renewable energy use throughout your supply chains globally by 2035;
by 2025, sign a procurement commitment for fossil-free primary steel and commit to source 100% fossil-free steel by 2050;
require responsible sourcing of your battery minerals, and develop battery design that allows for easy reuse and recycling of minerals;
establish a clear commitment to Indigenous Peoples’ right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent, which should be extended to your suppliers.
While Toyota continues to market itself as a sustainable company, the refusal to prioritize EVs and ongoing opposition to strong climate policies tell a different story.
As Toyota’s new CEO, you can change course. Commit to a zero-emissions future today.
