We urge the Biden administration to immediately issue an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) to protect all workers from COVID-19. The virus continues to send workers in all industries to their graves. President Biden made a promise to protect all workers from COVID-19.
We demand he keep that promise.
The COVID-19 crisis is far from over. More than 25,000 people in the U.S. died of COVID-19 between May 1st and June 22nd of this year. As of June 23rd, 155 million people have yet to receive a single dose of the vaccine and vaccination rates are dropping fast.
OSHA’s June 10th, 2021 COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) was essential, but it was narrowly limited to the health care sector. Workplace transmission is causing an outsized number of coronavirus infections across a wide range of industries. Research on recent deaths and hospitalizations shows that line cooks, agricultural workers, bakers, construction laborers, delivery workers, food production and processing workers, transportation workers, cleaning workers, and maintenance workers are all at elevated risk of dying from COVID-19. It’s no surprise that a disproportionate number of those in harm's way are Black and Brown workers, who have suffered higher rates of illness and death throughout the pandemic.
Every employer should be accountable for providing a safe workplace. No one should have to go to work wondering if they are going to get the virus and bring it home to their family and friends.
President Biden promised to put an OSHA rule in place to protect all workers. He kept his promise for health care workers. Now he must keep his promise to the rest of us.
