IRS Should Make Free Tax Filing Software Widely Available
The IRS is developing a free electronic filing tool of its own that would — at long last — give American taxpayers an alternative to costly tax preparation services.
Of course, the for-profit tax prep industry is aggressively fighting this commonsense and popular idea. And, at the moment, the IRS’s service is only a pilot program.
To the IRS
Americans should not have to pay profit-hungry companies in order to use a program to file taxes online. Thank you for developing a free alternative. We encourage you to make this software broadly available as soon as possible so that everyone will have a public option for electronic tax filing.
