Austin is in the process of updating its local version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which sets standards for energy efficiency in buildings. The codes can also be used to assist decarbonization of our transportation and buildings by including Electric Vehicle Ready and Electric Readiness provisions. These amendments would require buildings to include wiring to accommodate later addition of electric vehicle chargers and electric appliances.
Electrification of transportation and buildings is essential for meeting our climate goals. We cannot preserve a livable climate if we don’t phase out fossil fuels. We should start building smart now, so that it’s easy for later building occupants to electrify.
The draft Austin IECC codes are open for public comment through Thursday, April 15. Please submit a comment to support code updates that will facilitate decarbonization.
